Curiosity Rover Discovers Ancient Lake On Mars Which Could Have Supported Life For More Than 3 Billion Years

The thought of origin of life on ancient Mars was broader than scientists earlier thought. The NASA’s Curiosity Rover have found a lake on the surface of the red planet after three and a half years of study. This ancient lake which has now disappeared reveals the existence of various microbes on the Martian surface.

The lake which was once present on the huge Gale Crater on Mars once made life habitable due to suitable environments segregated by depths similar to water bodies present on Earth, according to a study done by NASA’s Curiosity rover. The presence of different environmental conditions has favored the growth of different life forms on Mars around 3 billion years ago. Now the researchers are trying to analyze the chemical conditions that existed in the lake to check the Curiosity’s payload for evaluating whether the lake truly existed or not. The detailed study regarding this is published in the journal Science on June 2.

The scientists and the researchers are far from concluding whether the life existed on Mars or not but they are trying to find out the signs of the existence of life on the surface of the planet. To determine this the researchers first rebuild the environment to similar to the one existed on the surface of a red planet to check whether it was able to support life or not.

Curiosity rover has landed on the surface of Mars in 2012 inside the 150-km-diameter to determine if the planet ever had favorable environmental conditions to support life forms or not. The NASA’s Curiosity rover have traveled more than 9.94 miles from the bottom of the Gale Crater to Mount Sharp. The rover climbed the Mount Sharp present near the crater’s center.

The Curiosity rover determined the changes in the chemical, physical and mineral composition in different areas of Mount Sharp. Some rocks represented a layered section of hematite which is iron mineral and other layers shown fine layers of magnetite. This helped the researchers to conclude that different environmental conditions existed in past. They also found “oxidant stratification” which is commonly found in environments lake. Along with this the researchers also found the changes taking place in climatic conditions of the Mars.
