Climate changes are causing a threat to marine species and also human beings. Various conservation groups, fishing organizations, and biologists are working together since decades to protect the salmon and trout species in California.

A new study suggests that salmon and trout species may become extinct in next 100 years due to climate changes like droughts and natural events.

The study was conducted by Davis from the University of California and Trout from the conservation group California. According to the report published on May 16, 23 out of 31 salmon species present in the Californian waters will soon become extinct. Growing agricultural lands and dams are the primary reason behind growing extinction threat.

Other species which are facing extinction threat are Chinook salmon which is quite costly and is marketed only in the state of California. Curtis Knight, executive director of CalTrout said: “If salmon and trout species become extinct the loss will affect California’s salmon fisheries and $7 billion inland sportfishing sector and the herald broader environmental crises.”

The latest report titled State of the Salmonids II: Fish in Hot Water which is updated report of 2008 noticed that five-year drought and present warming trends have led to this deterioration and the rate of extinction is alarming. In 2008 researchers said that five salmon species could become extinct in next five decades. But according to new reports, the number of species becoming extinct is almost tripled and now the number has been increased to 45. Also, the effects of climate change are more visible now.

Even if the degradation of river habitats and water diversions for irrigation is controlled the negative effects of climate change cannot be reversed. Salmon and trout fish species live in colder temperatures and due to rise in temperature in the recent decade, the California water was becoming hot making the fishes difficult to survive. This may be the main cause of extinction.

Farming, irrigation also hamper the normal functioning of salmon since the sediments get mixed with water and cause impurity. In the process of irrigation large amount of river water is utilized. The researchers state that floodplains and marshes should be maintained which will suit their habitat.
